Buy vs. Build
“Buy vs build” is a topic that frequently comes up during TaxTech conversations I have with tax leaders. In the same realm, the “Volkswagen vs Lamborghini” comparison sometimes comes up. You know what I am talking about? Let me explain 👉…
I posted on the “buy vs build” topic before, see here:.
More and more tax leaders understand that the build decision in the early phases comes with a lot of euphoria. Kudos, patting on the back, nicely in line with the “not invented here syndrome”. However, very soon after the go-live, the hard reality starts to loom 🥊. There is a reason why SaaS is eating the world 🍽️.
Every now and then the “Volkswagen vs Lamborghini” comparison gets added to the discussion.
“Oh Stevi, I am fully convinced of the power of theplatform, I really get the value proposition. However, we have built something internally. It is only a Volkswagen from a performance (and looks) perspective, but we do not need your Lamborghini”.
And at first sight, the Volkswagen comes with a lower price tag. Here is my boilerplate feedback on this:
Your Volkswagen looks like the better deal in the early stages. However, have you ever wondered why even the most robust software needs constant updates? The truth is, software is a living entity. Once you roll out your initial version, the journey just begins. Every feature and every line of code demands ongoing care. Why? Because the tech landscape is a shifting swamp. Your custom solution isn’t just about supporting your business functions. It’s about surviving in an evolving digital ecosystem. New vulnerabilities, browser updates, compliance changes - the list is endless. But here’s the kicker: these are just to keep the lights on, not to add value 😵💫…
Such a homegrown Volkswagen will come with a total cost of ownership that will largely exceed your expectations… More and more tax leaders understand this. That makes the selection of “buy” (SaaS) in almost all cases a no-brainer. The business case will speak for itself.
