On my way to update our tax compliance tracker in Excel

Spreadsheets: Tax Team's Best Friend or Risky Frenemy?

Let's face it, spreadsheets are incredibly useful. They’re flexible, affordable, and most of us in-house tax pros have some serious Excel chops 🥢. We can whip up tables, trackers, and even those eye-catching graphs and pie charts that make our reports shine. And who doesn’t feel a bit of pride after crafting yet another spreadsheet masterpiece?

But, here’s the kicker: while spreadsheets are our go-to tool, they can also be a ticking time bomb for tax teams 💣.

Why? Because each one of us builds our spreadsheets a bit differently. We end up with a mishmash of non-standardized, isolated datasets. Governance? Almost non-existent. Audit trails? Let’s just say they leave a lot to be desired, and a lot of frustration. And don't even get me started on version control – how many times have we asked, "Is this the latest version?". Assigning and managing user permissions in Excel is a real challenge as well.

So, what’s the takeaway? Embrace your spreadsheets, but stay savvy about their limitations. Keep an eye on those risks and consider more robust solutions where needed. After all, our goal is to ensure precision and compliance ✅, not chaos and confusion 🫣.
